The popular backyard game of cornhole is enjoyed by people of all ages. It’s easy to see the appeal of cornhole; it’s both easy to learn and can be played almost anywhere. What are Regulation Cornhole Boards?

Regulation cornhole boards are designed to meet specific requirements set forth by the American Cornhole Association (ACA). These requirements include:

  1. Size - Regulation boards are 2 feet wide by 4 feet long.
  2. Height - The playing surface of the board should be 12 inches from the ground.
  3. Hole Diameter - the Hole in the board should be 6 inches in diameter.
  4. Board Material - The board should be made from a specific type of wood, typically birch or poplar.
  5. Board Design - The board should be designed with specific dimensions and angles to ensure the best playing experience. Regulation boards have a 6-inch hole centered 9 inches from the top and 12 inches from each side. Additionally, the board should have a 1-inch bevel around the edges and a 3-4 inch crossbar underneath to provide support.

Why are Regulation Cornhole Boards Important?

Regulation cornhole boards are important because they ensure a fair and consistent playing experience for everyone. If you're playing on non-regulation boards, you may be at a disadvantage, which can affect the outcome of the game. Additionally, regulation boards are designed to be durable and withstand regular use, which means they’ll last longer and provide a better overall playing experience.

How to be Sure You’re Getting Regulation Cornhole Boards?

There are a few things you can do to ensure that you’re getting regulation cornhole boards. Here are some tips:

  1. Check the Dimensions, Material and Design - The first thing you should do when buying cornhole boards is to check the dimensions. If the boards don’t match the dimensions listed above, you’re not getting regulation boards. Additionally, check to make sure that the design falls in line with the regulation design including the 6 inch in diameter hole, and is made from birch or polar.
  1. If the boards match all of the specifications of regulation boards, but you’re still unsure if it’s regulation, you can check for certification from the ACA. The ACA certifies regulation cornhole boards, and you can find a list of certified manufacturers on their website.

Other Rules to Consider When Playing Cornhole

In addition to ensuring that you have regulation cornhole boards, there are other rules to consider when playing the game. Here are some of the most important rules to keep in mind:

  1. Scoring - In cornhole, a bag that goes through the hole is worth 3 points, and a bag that lands on the board is worth 1 point. The team with the highest score at the end of the game wins.
  2. Pitching - Each team takes turns pitching their bags at the opposite board. Players must stay behind the foul line when pitching and should not step over the line when throwing.
  3. Fouls - A foul occurs when a player steps over the foul line, pitches out of turn, or touches the board or bags while they’re still in motion.
  4. Playing Field - Cornhole is typically played on a flat surface like a driveway or a lawn. Make sure that the playing field is clear of obstacles and debris that could interfere with the game.
  5. Distance - The distance between the boards should be 27 feet for regulation play, however, younger players or beginners may choose to play from a shorter distance.
  6. Player Order - In cornhole, the team that scored the previous round goes first in the next round. If no team scored in the previous round, the team that threw first in the previous round goes first.
