How to Care for and Maintain Your Custom Corn Hole Boards

May 5, 2023

Cornhole can add an element of fun to any outdoor event. It’s an easy game to learn and doesn’t require complicated equipment. However, just like any other game, taking care of your equipment is important to ensure it lasts. This article will review some simple tips for keeping your cornhole boards and bags in tip-top shape.

Perhaps the most obvious step in caring for your board is to bring it inside during times of non-use. Extreme weather conditions such as hail, rain, snow, and mud can cause damage to your cornhole boards. In addition, excessive heat may cause issues with the wood or design on your cornhole board, leading to wrapping or worn-off designs. To protect your cornhole boards, do not leave them outside in harsh conditions and store them in a dry place indoors.

Another reason to bring your boards and bags inside is that the bags can attract squirrels or other animals that may try to eat the corn inside the bags. Be sure to store your corn-filled bags in a cool, dry place where animals cannot reach them. Alternatively, you can purchase bags filled with plastic resin pellets to avoid this risk from pests.

The second step in taking care of your boards is to wipe off the dust and dirt after playing. You wouldn’t think that a cornhole board would get very dirty, but after hours of playing - especially in dusty or muddy environments- boards can build up quite an accumulation of grime. Regularly cleaning your cornhole board playing surface and frame will help keep it in good condition and ensure the board's durability. All you need is a damp cloth. Gently wipe it off after play and ensure it is dry when you're done.

Likewise, cornhole bags can be washed with warm, soapy water. If you have corn-filled bags, be sure to hand wash them. Or, if you prefer, some bags can be purchased that are machine washable and can be tossed directly into the washing machine.

Storing your boards indoors when not in use and regularly cleaning them can ensure that they last a long time. But, if they are starting to look a bit worn after years of use, you can apply another coat of polyurethane to ensure they are still water-resistant. Apply between 5-10 coats of an oil-based polyurethane in even brushstrokes. Before applying the final coat, give your board a light sanding to provide a smooth, even playing surface. Polyurethane can provide many more years of life to your cornhole boards.

Sometimes accidents happen, and your cornhole board may get damaged or broken. However, with well-made boards, repairs can be a simple process. One of the most common types of damage is split or cracked boards, which can be fixed by using wood glue and clamps to hold the board together until it dries. Another common issue is a broken leg, which can be replaced by removing the old leg and attaching a new one using screws or bolts. It's also essential to regularly check for loose screws or bolts and tighten them as needed to prevent further damage. With a little effort, you can easily repair your cornhole board and keep it in excellent condition for years to come.

Taking care of your cornhole board is crucial for ensuring it lasts for years to come. By following these simple tips, such as storing it in a dry place, cleaning it regularly, and repairing any damages as soon as possible, you can keep your cornhole board in top condition. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, investing in your cornhole board is an investment in your enjoyment of the game. So take good care of it, and you'll be able to keep tossing those bags for years to come!
